Time Fished: 530pm - 745pm
Weather Conditions: Sunny, Air Temp 82 degrees
Water Conditions: Good flow at 300 cfs, just a little off color, water temp 64 degrees
Insects: saw a few lime sallies and some sulphurs When I finished fishing I made a stop at a bridge that typically has risers. I watched for about 5 min and about 15 different fish rose. Only a few times for each. This would have been about an hour any spinnerfall would have occurred.
I started a new thread since it had been a few weeks since I last posted in that older Tionesta thread. Also some of you are probably are wishing I would go back to work instead of being retired.
I ran 2 wet flies through my favorite riffle (Royal coachman wet and a Pickett Pin). I picked up 2 browns on the royal Coachman, lost 1 and missed 4. After how this riffle fished about 20-23 days ago I was disappointed in that total.
Next pass I swapped out the Pickett Pin for an olive woolly bugger. Once again the coachman caught the only fish (a rainbow). I had 2 other strikes.
I decided to swap out the bugger for a bead head March Brown wet. After a long haul downstream I caught the final fish of the day. Another brown on the BH March Brown emerger. I had at least one other strike on this rig before I changed to a streamer. Nothing touched the streamer so I ended the day and licked my wounds. Tough night.
The shallow riffle had fished very well in early May, but was not very forgiving tonight. I couldn’t help but think if people kept a lot of trout for the table or if this was just one of the nights that trout were lethargic, hand full stomachs or if there was something else. As I walked upstream to the truck, there was an osprey flying over that riffle. Who knows maybe they were a factor.
