Time Fished: 11am - 3pm
Weather Conditions: 55 degrees, mostly cloudy
Water Conditions: Clear; Temp was 45 when I started and 48 when I finished; cfs was 170 which is much lower than the historical median cfs of 560 for this day
Insects: not many; some Caddis and some stoneflies
Since the water was low, I started out swinging a wet and a woolly bugger in my favorite riffle and only had one strike. I changed flies to a weighted nymph and added 2 sinkers. I was contacting bottom now but had no strikes. I did foul hook a waterdog but he got free pretty quickly. I decided to move to a shallower riffle and changed to a March Brown nymph and a GRHE wet. I did have 6-7 strikes but didn’t get a clean hookup on any. Water temp was probably a factor. I decided to go back to deeper riffle and try swinging flies on a sinking tip line (I experimented with it last year with some success and water was very cold that day too).
As I was returning to the water a spin fisher asked if I had any dry flies since he noticed there were very few insects but the trout seem to be taking every one that floats by. He said on Friday there were far more risers and he had left his fly rod at home. I thanked for the info and declined his invite to cast right beside him. Told him I would step in after he left.
So with my sinking tip spool on my reel I headed upstream to fish. No strikes in the deeper water once again. When the spin fisherman left I switched rods and tied on a Caddis. I had not seen a rise all day. I stood where he told me the occasional rise was occurring and blind casted. One fish eventually rose and didn’t come up again I continued blind casting and I did have a nice take but it got off rather quickly.
So if you go to Tionesta, the fish seem to be looking up even in really cold water. I heard later that there maybe be more risers above Lynch. I think it was Bruno that experienced decent dry fly action last year.
I ended the day with zero. On the way back to camp I stopped at a trib I’d never fished and did find some very small brook trout in pretty low numbers but it was a neat little place. The largest Brookie was 4”.
