Tim Cammisa: Easiest way to tie a blood knot

Got to walmart or similar source of low priced sporting goods. Buy a spool of the cheapest 4lb test they have. Tie at least 5 blood knots every day for 2 weeks. You will no longer have problems tying blood knots.

Or spend evenings making tons of knotted leaders like I did for years. Blood knots for me are a breeze.

Two things that help me:

Tension on the leader I'm adding to and tension on the material I am adding.​

To get tension on the leader I'm adding to, I'll let the current pull my line and leader tight in the guides or let gravity do the job. To get tension on the material I'm adding, I put the spool in a pocket.

In my case I use a homemade leader dispenser so I'll leave that in the pocket where it's carried after I pull out enough leader material to tie the knot. Because tension makes it easier, I NEVER cut the material off the spool that I am adding to a leader until the knot is tied. This also eliminates waste..

Another thing, for some reason I find it 1000 times easier to tie a blood knot with the leader to my left and the new tippet to my right. Why I don't know, but for that reason I ALWAYS carry my leader material in a location where it is easy for me to get it on the right side.
