Fished 2 - 8:30 p.m., from Ramcat put-in downstream for about one mile. The air was hot and humid, but the water temperature at its warmest was about 67 degrees. Flow below 800 cfs. I netted 3 and lost a couple. Being a dry-fly snob, I fished only dries even though risers were sporadic at best. Caught 2 on a #12 slate drake and 1 on a #22 black gnat (from one extreme in size to another.)
As usual on the Yough, all fish were well-feed, heavy and powerful.
My biggest was about 17 or 18 inches. But one big bow, I estimate at about 4 pounds, was hooked in heavy riffles. Between the fast water and the fishes' size, it was like trying to stop a stampeding water buffalo with a 5 weight. For about 30 seconds it was awesome. Then the fly simply pulled out. Fun stuff.
I saw a hodgepodge of insects including, slate drakes, cahills, BWOs, caddis (#18 - #20) BIG potomanthus (#10), tons of midges and whatchamacallits. In the evening I fished a flat-water section, which was surprisingly pretty quiet with few rising fish.
All and all a slow day, but I was wet wading so it was a refreshing way to escape the heat and humidity. (Especially since my home air conditioning was on the fritz.)
