SCUDS!
Well after recieving about 15 PM's about the Wild Trout Section of the Upper Tully.....I finally got one that didnt just ask me for the location. (I know a few others asked and I will bhe responding to you soon) Stevie-B wanted to check it out and we made arrangements for this day to be our day.
The weather was trying to co-operate and also mess us up. The night before it obviously rained a good bit because this is the first time I have ever seen the water off-color on this precious Limestone Spring Creek. In fact, it had slightly more volume but not enough to make it unfishable.
When we started at the top of the section that I have access to it wasent raining and I caught a nice wild brown (12-13inches) on a scud. I actually had a scud tandem rig on. I was using a epoxy back orange scud and a epoxy back green scud. I missed a few more. This was all Steve had to see and he was quickly putting a scud dropper on his elk hair caddis. It wasent long before he caught a small wild brown. He also had a nice one hooked....i mean like a 15-16 inch brown. He was diffently bigger...but came off. DARN that funk eh Stevie 🙂 Slowly the rain was starting to set in with a fine drizzle by now.
We started moving down stream and the next few holes we each caught a few more trout. Steve was doing really well with his gray scud. We came to the first bend and there he caught a few nice 12-13 inch wild browns. Almost made me put on a gray scud 🙂 It was looking like it was going to be a good day of fishing dispite the rain. None of the big bruiser fish have shown up yet
We came to a point where the stream makes a hard S turn. I caught one and we had a few strikes. At the end of the S turn is a very large pool. that goes around yet another turn. There is a large stump half submerged and a undercut bank behind it to which the current flows beside. Sounds like big fish water dont it?
:-D Well Steve caught one smaller brown there and then saw one of the monsters chasing what was probably a wild rainbow. I was just down stream fishing after the turn on a long straight run. I missed 2 fish right there too. He yelled down to me about the fish. I could tell it got his heart beating. The Stream was off color and I was concerned we werent going to catch any fish, well that worry was over. I was also concerned because I had talked about how there were large trout in the stream and if we didnt catch any of them....we most likely werent going to see them(because of the cloudy water). Well Steve got to see one. He said the thing was a monster! 😎 :lol:
Around the next bend I caught 3 more and was bull&!@* with steve as he fished. He was rippem off! He caught at least 4-5 while i was talking to him and missed a few more. We got down to a long straight stretch of water where they are usually rising. The rain was really coming down now. Kinda hard. I was soak and wet.
Oddly enough steve got 2 on that caddis in this section. And had several more caught or had them strike the scud. I was in the middle of the straight catching trout after trout (all small boys 6-10 inch bows and browns) but i caught a bunch. :-D Steve then moved up to the top of the section and caught a nice wild rainbow that wouldnt give up.
We moved into the final section of the stream. In the biggest hole of the section Steve caught 2 very nice wild browns and I caught 1 and missed a few more. This section of stream has alot od riffles and faster water. I didnt fish it much Steve caught a few more trout before the end of the trip. I even saw him dial a phone....set a hook and get a 13 inch wild brown in all at one time. Now thats multitasking! :lol: If i didnt break my camera I would have taken a picture of it!
Anyways in conclusion....all fish were taken on either a caddis or a scud. About 95 percent of the fish were on scuds. I lost track of how many fish we caught. Had to be over 20. It was a nice trip and it was good to get out with someone from this board and introduce them to a new stream. I know Steve liked it......wild fish in the Tully....it is truely amazing :-D
