Man, that is awesome! Very cool. I was considering going to Japan to fish one day, then I saw a photo of the giant hornets they have in the forests over there, and changed my mind for now..

My pb is 11 and I caught a 12 Incher whose origin was unclear, so I just say 11 to be safe. Both were from big spring, however, and I consider that completely separate from what people mean when they say brookie fishing. My biggest freestone brookie is only 9.5

Ironically the biggest brookie caught in PA was a fall stockie on Little Mahoning creek when a local club used to stock some kyped monsters. Wild? Idaho on a high elevation lake.

Last night I was revisiting a Rolf Nylinder video where he travels to Japan. The small stream anglers there call themselves “Shaku hunters.” Their goal is to catch an iwana (local char variety) that measures one “shaku” (a traditional measurement based on the length of the human forearm, standardized to 30.3 cm).

I looked up the conversion and that is about 11.93 inches. Kind of funny that across the world here in the PA mountains, that size is similarly about the threshold for what many would consider a “trophy” of our native char. Probably a foot is a logical cut point on the imperial system.

Guess you’re a shaku hunter now! Or maybe we need to make up a PA-equivalent term..

Yeah, Utah for me for wild fish in an alpine lake. Stockers? I've caught some enormous pigs, but they just don't count. Nothing wrong with stocked trout and I have caught some absolute pig Brook trout, but, it's not the same thing, not even close and shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath (or on a thread about PA native Brookies). 😉

the one's I caught in idaho are wild. haven't been stocked since the 70's. a lot of those western lakes were arial planted in the early 70's. They have plenty of good spawning habitiat.
