Nothing fancy and certainly not a slick production, but this hour+ long video shows his method of tying a number of popular soft hackles after providing some autobiographical detail.

Not sure of the date, but I would guess he was in his 80's.

Thanks for sharing that. Some great iconic patterns on that video. I really enjoyed watching it. You may see some of Syl’s patterns popping up on the “what are you tying today thread” in the near future. I love the simplicity of these old patterns and they all will still fish amazingly well.

I had his books and DVDs.
That’s where I learned to whip finish. Up until I saw him do it on DVD, I used to do a series of half hitches.
This was my beginning into soft hackles and wet flies,years ago
