Swatara Creek Dauphin? 6/30/12

Floated from Humelstown access downstream to 283. very nice, hit all the good looking smallie water and we were rewarded. Big carp in some places (4-5'). some Muskies in some spots, didn't hit them but they are there. good time of year to be on the swattie. bring a boat though, thats the only way to get to the good spots...you'll know em' when you see em'.

as a more personal note:

don't be afraid to try something new. I fancy myself a kind of trout snob and never was interested in smallmouth but after the action of last saturday I can honestly say WOOT WOOT on SMB's! I went with a good friend of mine who is a bit of a SMB guru, Sasquatch and his brother. Sas wasn't so sure of the canoe thing and he did excellent! we all caught and had a great time. we will be going back again! get out, give the trout a break and smash some smallies. they'll put a bend in you're rod and give a good account of themselves! BTW, the flies for smallies are fun to tie too, thanks Ed!

Nice report Tim - good to see more guys fishin warm water.
Make a note on the muskies. Muskies in clear, shallow streams on blue-bird sunny days often have lock-jaw. However, they'll often lay up in the same pool all summer. Wait for a cloudy day, or maybe a day with slightly higher water, and go back and get 'em.

I'm glad Tim invited my brother and me to do this. Apart from never getting a chance to fish w/ my brother anymore, the chance to get my bro and Tim onto smallies was great. I never fished from a canoe, so that was definitely new to me, but it went fairly well. I'm just glad that Tim and my brother see the joy in WW now! Hopefully that means I have some local fishing partners to fish with on the late summer nights. I'm surrounded by miles and miles of excellent WW fisheries here in northern Lancaster, but fishing partners always lacked! I have a feeling that the last minute smallie trips may not be frowned upon so much anymore ;-)

Tim is right. The carp in there were just ginormous. Next time we do this trip, I'm gonna tag along an 8wt and target those beasts a little more aggressively.

Man, I love the summer. I can trout fish, I can go for smallies, largemouth, panfish, whatever! Now I gotta save up for one of those pontoon boats!

BTW-"SMB guru" just means I've actually targeted the species in the past, as opposed to accidentally catching them on my streamer!

That particular section you fished holds quite a few muskies. It gives up a 40" every year.

Catch...no. Hook...yes. 6 lb mono and the teeth on a 30+ inch Muskie don't mix too well.
