Fished Upper section of Laural Hill and Medow run. I put in at the mouth of the sream. Didn't see any fish so I kept walking....and walking....and walking. Eventually made it to the BS camp before i started seeing fish (although I sah a few smallish trout in between maybe natives. if so GOOD!) They apperently dumped their fish allotment right off the road in Conestoge cause they were stacked up in the slow holes there. I hate fishing that type of water, and didn't have any luck. Walked back to the Jeep and saw some guys looking over the bridge, decided to join them. Well they apperently stocked the lower access. The bad news was that it was only 3 fish, the good news was that they were all about 2 feet long.

Headed to Medow. Tons of fish, tons of people. Tough going caugh 1 big bow on a glo bug. caught a bunch of small wild rainbows on glo bugs and nymphs.

Any one know the sotry on these wild bows? Are they comming up from the Yough? All had parr marks and reminded me of fish that we saw in the Smokeys.
 
Ryan, I suspect the rainbows were fingerlings stocked in the Yough, though I could be wrong. Were you fishing the lower section near the mouth?

Those would be stocked fingerlings from the Yough. I caught a bunch of them last week. I don't think you'll find any fingerlings above the natural waterslide. Unfortunately you won't find any stocked fish either. As far as I know all the fish in Meadow were dumped near the bridges at the top and bottom of the DHALO section. Did you try the upper end of Meadow near the park office?

From what you said all the fish at Laurel Hill are by the road in the B.S. Camp or at the bridge by the lake. All the fish at the Loyalhanna are near the nature trail. I wish they would spread them out more.

I've noticed the same thing, but I also have another problem, the conditions of these streams was less than ideal and they stocked anyway. The recent rains have helped our local SW streams, but at the time of the stocking they were pretty low. Maybe the holes at the access points were the only place with any H2O, or maybe there wasn't enough help to stock the fish other then the access points.

I know, none of us should really complain cause we didn't help stock. I guess that they will eventually spread out.

I didn't know they stocked rainbow fingerlings. For what ever reason I assumed that they would not be rainbows.

I never remembered seeing large amts of wild fish in the upper sections of Medow so I knew something was up. I thought maybe that it was the "October Surprise" that schrec always teases us with.

I did not try the upper section. I only fished that area once and it was during snow melt. I was not impressed but maybe I didn't get an accurate sampling of it. From the looks of my map Medow comes from a pond. Has any brave soul ever trid to access it up there?

I was also concerned about the conditions when they stocked. I don't think there's anything special about the holes near the roads. The only thing that did occur to me was that direct from truck to stream may be less traumatic than whatever method they would use to spread them out more.

I think I'll try to make a point to take a day off next year and help with the fall stocking.

I have not been upstream of the DHALO section on Meadow. I understand that a trib of Meadow gets stocked with giant fish by Nemacolin Woodlands Resort so their "guides" can take people out and catch big fish.

All the water was in that section too. I fished behind the tackle shop and there were less fish there but there was almost no current either.
The fish are where the water is...if it would just freakin' rain...they'd move.

I have fished above the DHALO on Meadow, wasn't that bad gets fished/stocked pretty good in the spring. Two years ago I fished a decent hatch of sulphers up there and haven't gone back.
The trib you are thinking about is Beaver Creek, they put some biggins in there and they can be tough to catch. I've never fished there , but have a few friends that do on a regular basis.

PS. I think I'll take a day off for the fall stocking next year too.

No tease. Those "October Surprises" are actually very inconsistent. I've been fishing Meadow for 20 years. I've seen big spawning browns maybe a few times. It's hit or miss, definitely. If we don't get any rain soon, even fingerlings will have a hard time making it up Meadow!
 
Here's a fish from the Loyalhanna that went 16 inches. It seems most of the fish in the SWPA DHALO fall stocking this year are rainbows from 14-16 inches. Nice fish.
