Hunted ducks with my dad yesterday morning. It was 18 degrees when we woke up and the river was very icy. Slush ice was all over the river and there was some solid ice in spots around islands. We hunted the morning and i got a mallard. When we got back to the boat ramp there were a few guys fishing and while loading the boat we witnessed one guy pull in a 19' from shore and another guy in a boat pull an 18'. We came in and ate lunch. I was encouraged by seeing some other guys connect so after eating lunch i decided to grab the fly rod and make a few casts, not expecting much.
I only fished for about a half hour and didn't even move spots, but i managed 6 bass from about 12-15/16 inches to hand and a miss or two. It was unbelievable, i caught bass on my first 3 casts. All were caught on a solid black clouser with green flash, fished very slow with 1 inch twitchy strips. It ended up being the most productive day bass fishing i've had all season. This warm snap of weather really has the fish turning on. All fish were caught from shore, wading in to about waist deep and casting out to water that's probably 3-5 feet.
