Dear Board,
I spent the day with my brother Michael pictured below on a guided drift boat trip on the Susquehanna River. We put in at Sweigart's Island and fished the river down to the Liverpool FD access.
The day started slowly, but once we floated through the island frog water and got over to the Dauphin County side of the river the fishing was phenomenal. Michael caught the best fish of the day @ 18.5 inches. We caught fish from 6 inches to the big one with many from 13 to 16 inches. With an upriver wind and two right-handed casters in a drift boat I switched over to spinning rig in the afternoon.
Time fished 9:30 AM to 5:15 PM
Weather - Overcast to partly sunny.
Temperature - 65 to 75 F
Water temperature-middle 50's but slightly cooler on the eastern shore
Fly fishing was done with 7 and 8 weight rods and full intermediate clear camo lines. All fly caught fish were caught on Clouser Minnows in Olive over Cream or Orange over Cream in size 4 to 6. Motor oil with a blue tail tube jigs were used to spin fish. That color should be outlawed, it's better than fishing a live stonecat or hellgrammite. 😉
Almost all fish were caught in the deeper troughs between rock ledges that run straight up and down stream. A few were caught in tail outs of grass beds, but if the fly or lure was kept in the deeper water paralleling the rock ledge it got bit.
