Susquehanna River Lancaster/Daulphin Counties 7/28/15

Got the opportunity to fish some of the old haunts my father and I used to fish when I was a kid from 3pm to 7:30pm. Water was clear and down. Worked all spots of the river with a huge articulated chub pattern.

Riverfront Park
Arrived here first and fished the grass flats along the shallows hoping for a bass or musky cruising for bait fish. Unable to hook up with anything. I then made my way out to the island and fished the heavy deep riffle that ran beside it to no avail. It was hot and humid and the sun was killing me and maybe the fishing but man was it beautiful out there.

Falmouth
Again the water looked ideal and I hopped rocks around the shoreline but was unable to locate any fish. There was a guy with lic plate PA MUSKY tossing some huge stuff. I didn't stay here long.

Canal Lock
Fished the riffles here and finally hooked up with a few decent bass and saw a few others crashing the water too far out for me to reach them.

I had forgotten exactly how beautiful out majestic river really is and it brought back a ton of good memories. Maybe some ill share at a later date. Got some great pictures though.

Its sad to see the river in this state though. I remember fishing grass flats catching decent bass by the boat loads and going out further would yield some nice fish. My how things have changed........ :-(

White flies should be on now but doesn't sound like it's worth it...again. If you don't mind me asking, where is the Canal Lock? I've not heard of it. I drove over the river on the Turnpike bridge Sunday and it still looked high.

The Susky has yet to consistently reach its typical "summer flow" of +/- 10,000 CFS. It's actually a good thing to have more water in the river, but it's easy to get spoiled fishing it when the flow is at the summer level. Obviously wading and locating fish is much easier at the lower flows.

Haven't even looked at the USGS. Wouldn't venture out if it was over 4' in Harrisburg. Maybe 32' at Columbia if my memory is correct.

Sal - thanks for that link. Never fished the Susky up that way.

Anyone ever fished around the Shock's Mill bridge? Took a walk last winter along the river and turned around there. That was before they installed the walkway around it.

Yep. Beautiful to look at but hardly worth fishing anymore in those areas except for flatheads.

Yeah, still needs to come down a bit for ideal fly fishing. It's 4.11' as of this afternoon. Will be good wading levels soon if the rains hold off. Looking forward to getting out soon.

Some of my spin fishing friends are reporting that they are experiencing their best bass fishing around Harrisburg in years with lots of mid sized fish mixed in with the biggies.

The North Branch around Tunkhannock area is looking near perfect right now, saw white fly hatches 3 of the past 4 nights (one night didn't go out)

3.4' to 3.6' on the Harrisburg gage is perfect for wading.

Ventured into the Susquehanna at York Haven today for the first time this year. Fished from 2:00 to 3:30, could see bottom in about 3 feet of water. Tried to force top water action for first hour. No luck. Switched to an olive bugger and landed a 13 inch & an 8 inch smallmouth pretty quickly. Both were good healthy fish.
