The river finally seemed to be at good kayaking flows, so I floated from Marietta to Columbia this afternoon. I was also out Friday night up near Bainbridge, but the flows were much higher and the water was quite a bit dirtier. Today, the water was still off-color, but the river was moving nicely. I was able to eddy behind some big rocks and slowly work the water along the banks. I landed my first smallmouth of the year on a clawdad stripped low and slow in a deep pocket behind a ledge. I was using a versileader to keep my line down. It felt GOOD to get back on the river and land a smallie. I'm hoping this is a precursor to a great summer of low flows and tons of smallies... 🙂
And just a side note - Marietta is such a great town. My wife and I rode 14 miles up and down the river in the morning and I kayaked and fished for smallies in the afternoon all right from my house. It has such awesome access to what makes this area great.
