Went out looking for shad but was pleasantly surprised when my first three fish were all big smallies. The smallies all hit a small natural colored clouser intended for shad. I'm guessing they were prespawn. They didn't look beat up, they were fat, they fought hard, and they were caught at the mouth of a creek on a strong current seam.
Eventually i did catch some shad. There are lots of hickories around but the low water is making them hard to get to from shore. i landed a dozen up to 2lbs and lost/missed at least as many as i landed. I didn't get any americans but some of the spin fisherman claimed to have gotten 1 or 2.
