woke up at 5 yesterday morning and headed down to maryland to try for some shad. I ended up catching just about everything else, but i did manage to get 2 shad to hand and had 1 jump off just out side of net range. Up til last week guys were catching them left and right, as soon i get time to go all the reports say the run is pretty much over. I still had a blast though, if i caught 1 white perch, i must have caught 1000. I caught 7 species of fish-white perch, yellow perch, bullhead catfish, hickory shad, gizzard shad, golden bonefish (aka carp), and 2 small stripers. While eating a chicken wrap for lunch before i left, i saw a guy catch a gar. The carp was pretty cool, but i wish it woulda been a big striper or shad. It took a dead drifting spoon fly which seems kinda out of character for a carp. It put up a good fight, but i wouldn't say it lived up to the golden bonefish moniker. It fought more like a redfish if you ask me. I always wanted to say i caught a carp on a fly rod, since it's trendy now, but never was willing to actually try to catch one, so it's nice to check that off the list. The carp seemed to be feeding all morning, pretty agressively in a back eddy on caddis, so i was actually thinking about trying a dry fly, but was too lazy to change my whole set up. I believe i also saw some shad rising in the eddy every now and again, but couldn't tell for sure. A few of the bigger perch actually got on my reel for a little. I might be tarred and feathered for admitting this on a fly fishing site, but i kept 4 of the nicer perch for dinner last night. I love perch/walleye and after having caught so many i figured taking a few for dinner wouldn't threaten the survival of the species. The water seemed high and was defn a little off color. Didn't take the temp but felt like it was around 60 to me.
