River remains dead low at 3.04 at the Harrisburg gage. I was able to easily wade all the way across the river at the first section I hit in the upper Dauphin Narrows (photo below). In that section, close to half the river bed is dry rocks and one almost needs to walk to mid channel to find current and depth. Much of the water is almost still pools with little to no current. However, bass were around, even in these spots.
I hit a second section below the DN in the evening.
Weather: partly cloudy with highs in the 70s. Fished afternoon-evening. Water temp was 72, gin clear, with loose grass in the water column (where there was open areas with current). Strong breeze from the south put a chop on the water and made seeing fish and casting difficult. By evening, there was cloud cover and less wind.
Started with a stonecat and got a couple... but due to the extremely shallow conditions where I started, I switched to a pencil popper and had steady luck with lotsa fish, mostly small - probably averaged a strike every three or four casts in the afternoon. Got two mid teens - one a 17" from shin deep water just a stone's throw from a popular public boat ramp. By evening, there were mayflies with some very small fish rising but there were active fish everywhere and by evening more casts resulted in a strike than didn't (as is typical with poppers, I hooked far fewer).
The game tonight was definitely the popper bite with lots of little fellas, mostly in the 6-9" range. Good to see so many fish that are likely from the 2012-2014 year classes. The crayfish have definitely dropped off for the season, but small minnows were in the shallows and I saw several fish bust on them.
