I flyfished the Susquehanna tonight after it got dark. I landed a half dozen smallmouth and a rockbass! LOL That's the first rockbass I caught in quite some time!
This bass tied my record for my biggest ever on a flyrod. Approx: 19 1/2" and around 4lbs. He pulled drag down to the backing and jumped several times....... almost too much for my 6wt! The pic doesn't do the bass justice, but I didn't want to put him on shore, I was wading in the middle of the river, or hold the heavy bass out of the water ( after seeing on this site the proper way to handle big fish)
In the darkness the fish seem to come out of cover and hunt for food in a foot of water or less. All fish caught tonight were caught in 6" to 1' of water. I used unweighted streamers on Streamer Express line. Everyone says that black is the color for night, but I couldn't buy a bite on black! All fish were caught on a all white marabou streamer. I couldn't see the black streamer either, but I could see the 2" white fly twenty feet away!
Simply a wonderful night. I was about to give up on the Susquehanna, but Mother Nature is a powerful thing. When the hot sun is out and the water is hot and shallow, I don't like to fish because I'll probably get skin cancer or have a heat stroke!! The fish don't like to come out either! In summer, night time is the right time.
