Susquehanna River, Dauphin County 9/24

[Woolybugger]

A nice day for flyfishing. The river is so shallow, around 3' on the Harrisburg guage.
A black lead eye woolybugger worked best today. I clipped the hackle short, approx 1/8", and the streamer looked just like a real hellgramite!
Not a high numbers day, only six smallmouth landed, but so much fun on a 6wt. The one in the pic is a fat 18"er.
The "fall bite" is starting and next week the trout streams will be stocked again and the striped bass are almost ready for the "fall run"........... life just couldn't get any better!

At least this pic has part of the tail missing!! LOL not part of the head!

I catch such huge fish that it's hard to get the whole fish in a picture............. maybe next time I'll use a stick to hold it away from the camera.

I have a better idea...take me with you next time...I'll take the picture. I have not cut off a tail yet? :-D

I like big butts...what can I say! Or Tails I should say....

My theory is the tail is larger on the female wild browns at a younger age to help with the spawning. Up to about 14 inches (3 year olds) the tail is proportional or rather, does not look oversized. After that, in the larger fish, the tails seem to get really large.

Not fishing with Sal...same watershed as his fish though...just not the same crik. About 4 miles away.

That is interesting that they are from the same shed...Is your spawning tail theory just for that watershed or for all streams and browns?

All infertile sheds. I believe that the fish have a hard time filling out their frame like they do on a spring creek or Penns Creek.

In our nursery at two years old, the weight supercedes the length because of the feed. In the wild it goes the other way.
