I fished the Susquehanna river tonight from 6pm until 8pm. I caught and released eight bass from 10" to 12". The river was 3.3' at the Harrisburg gauge and clear. No snotgrass in the water and quite a bit cooler than the hot, shallow water we had for the last two months.
July and August were terrible for fishing in the river. I caught a couple smallmouth after dark with white drys, but that was it! I was really worried about the river, still am, but Mother Nature is such a wonderful thing. The fish know how to survive, and tonight proved it to me.
I used a 5wt with Mastery Streamer Express Clear Tip. I caught six on olive woolybuggers and two on black woolybuggers. Size 6 with no weight. With the sink tip streamer line I use a 3' piece of 4lb flourocarbon and a unweighted streamer. All the fish were caught in 4' of water, and the streamers just suspend 6" from the bottom. I think it's much better than floating line with a weighted fly.
Such a wonderful time in the beautiful river. A 12" smallmouth bass will pull drag from a 5wt and jump three feet out of the water just like a steelhead! The horrible heat is over and the fall fly fishing is about to start.
