Time Fished: 830am - 1130am
Weather Conditions: started out 52 degrees and cloudy and then by end it was 62 degrees and sunny
Water Conditions: 59 degrees, slightly off color
Insects: Caddis, sulfers or cahills, Paraleptophlebia
It was very chilly in the morning. The stream was much lower than my last trip in May.
I swung a woolly bugger and wet fly combo. Fish seemed to be distributed across the whole stream but no real honey hole. All Browns were caught in the riffle. Rainbows were in the pools and riffles. There were some insects and I saw about a dozen rises. I had hoped to switch to a dry after fishing my wets through but another guy was in the hole where the few rises were. He said he had caught 2.
I got 4 rainbows and 3 browns and the trout took the flies roughly 50-50. Of the browns I caught some looked wild by coloration and size but they didn’t have the blue spot behind the eye. There has been some buzz about wild browns in Sugar for a few years now. Apparently a few tribs are producing wild fish.
Only 3 vehicles on this 2+ mile stretch that has 4 parking area. 2 parking area had no fisherman.
