Time Fished: 315pm to 630pm
Weather Conditions: 77 degrees, a mix of Sun and clouds.
Water Conditions: 60 degrees, high, very off color, about 3ft visibility
Insects: saw about 20 Caddis
I was headed to my camp and I hoped to fish a stream on the way up. Most area streams looked terrible on the USGS site, so I took a chance that Sugar creek was fishable and it was. I would have liked it a little slower and a little clearer but I’ll take it.
I started with a 2 fly combo. Olive woolly on point and a dark wet fly with a gold tag as the dropper. This combo has been kind to me in the past in heavier water. I swung them down and across. After I caught the first trout on the olive bugger I switched it out for a black woolly bugger since I thought the contrast between the water color and the darker fly would be better.
I caught fish in all of the normal places. I never had that magic hole just a nice pace catching fish. Three areas that are consistent producers didn’t turn up anything. But one such producing location had a family of three that were leaving when I was 60 yards upstream working down. I crossed the creek to fish that side and I saw they had about 10 on a stringer. I never had a strike in that spot.
I ended up with 7 rainbows and 7 browns. They took the flies equally and irrespective of species. That’s what usually happens. That combo of flies generally produces those same results. I missed about half of the total strikes. Had no strikes in the deeper holes (over my waist) where visibility surely contributed.
I’d say 12 more hours of flow will make it perfect. If anyone starts at 6am tomorrow they should have a very big day. Only a few other people fishing today.
