I fished Sugar Creek in the morning and then again in the evening. Here are both write ups.
Time Fished: 730am - 1245pm
Weather Conditions: 63 degrees warming to 80, Very Cloudy, possible threat of rain but never did. Clouds stayed all morning and then at 11am the sun came out.
Water Conditions: 61 degrees at 8am, Average Flow, running a little murky due to rain upstream the previous night
Insects: Tan Caddis hatching consistently from 730am to 930am (1-2 each minute); I saw March Browns, a small yellow stonefly, and a spinner with a rusty body. Nothing really to entice fish to rise.
I was fishing a new section of water so I put on a BH wooly bugger since it allows me to fish anyway I need to as I move through deep holes or shallow riffles. It ended up being a very good morning. I caught 41 Rainbows and 4 browns.
There were 2 other guys fishing together that probably had a comparable morning or possibly even better numbers. I was fishing downstream and they were fishing upstream so we crossed paths in the middle of the stretch. When I was above them, we both had fish on, when I was on the bank going around them, they had fish on. When I was below them we both had fish on. At the end of the day I walked to my truck and they were finishing up where I had started the day and they had a double (both fish jumped at the same instant). We talked for a few minutes afterward and they did well. It was just one of those windows of opportunity where fish were grabbing everything within reach. Sometimes you get lucky and hit the jackpot.
The evening was quite a contrast from the morning.
Time Fished: 700pm - 850pm
Weather Conditions: 84 degrees, Full Sun
Water Conditions: water temp was 66; water was much clearer
Insects: Saw a few March Brown Duns and a few MB spinners, just a few Caddis
I fished a different section than I did this morning hoping to get some dry fly action. There were very few insects and only about a dozen rises.
I used the same wooly bugger and had about 15 strikes, caught 2 rainbows and lost 3 other fish.
I wondered how many days through the course of a season do we unknowingly miss the hot time and instead slug it out for just a couple fish. I’d guess there might be 5 such days on each stream.
Putting fishing aside. The Toads were back in full force. Singing to attract a mate. They can really hit the high note.
