Time Fished: 635pm - 825pm
Weather Conditions: Around 73 degrees and Sunny
Water Conditions: I forgot to take a temp but since their were rising fish, it had to be warmer. Creek was bank to bank, lots of water, probably 4-5 foot visibility.
Insects: I saw a dark bodied spinner around a sz 14 and I saw a tan caddis. Only 5 total rises
I got on Sugar with a tight window to fish. Plan A came together when no one was fishing the place I planned to start. My mindset coming in was that the stream would not be very clear. So I tied on a streamer at the road, but the water was more clear than expected. First streamer pass concluded without a fish being caught but having 4 misses.
I went back to the top of the riffle and tied on an olive woolly below a royal coachman wet fly. That combo fished pretty well. All 3 browns took the bugger and the lone rainbow favored the coachman. Second pass I switched the point fly to a white woolly bugger and caught another brown on it. I started a 3rd pass but a spin fisherman arrived and cut me off. I took that opportunity to move downstream.
The water downstream was really flowing heavy. The first part of that riffle was very deep, so I felt most fish didn’t have a chance. I worked it about 40 yds before I had a strike. After that point the trout turned on and several were able to see the fly. Once again a rainbow chose the Royal Coachman with the other rainbow and brown attacked the bugger.
All told, I caught 5 browns and 3 rainbows on 31 total strikes. I weeded out 2 rainbows for my wife’s lunch on Sunday.
I caught a few smaller browns (8”-9”) that could have passed for wild trout. Not sure of their true origin, it just seemed odd.
