So you would just imitate them with your usually small zebras, als rat, etc? Some of the fish were taking on top, coming out halfway out of the water. Actually it was only the palominos doing it. They would come out with half their head and back. I tried a Griffith's gnat to imitate them but didint get anything on it. And Jack you scared me when i seen that pic, looked like a deformed frog

Often when midges are on the water surface and in the air, the trout will still be keying on emergers. The pupa you were using can be tied with a bit of cdc at the collar, or if you have some that are lighter weight with dubbing near the head, put a little bit of floatant on the dubbing and it should hang in the film or just beneath it.

Ahh yes, well perhaps ill try that tomorrow. The hatch always happens around noon, when the sun hits the one pool for about 45minutes. I guess it would make sense to try a tandem of one midge underwater and one in the film, see what happens

I'd use a black midge body with a turn of hackle, or a puff of cdc. Classic midge adult pattern.

You'll find these hatches when the sun hits the water like that on cold days.
