Standing Stone Creek, Huntingdon Co, 8/17/13

Snuck away from a family function to screw around on Standing Stone Creek for about two hours on Saturday. It is a pretty small stream and it was running low, clear, and cold (low 60's). Although low, there were a good number of deep runs. I ended up landing quite a few trout (all browns). Caught all of them on beetles and caddis. A few of them were fingerlings, which is always encouraging.

that's good news. The "mild" summer is paying off. SSC is usually unfishable in normal summers except for a few locations.
Was the low 60s measured or estimated using the hand thermometer. Catching fingerlings this deep in august is an encouraging find. May be we'll see healthier than normal trout this spring.

No doubt I was surprised. Expected to catch a fall fish or two. I missed plenty of fish as well, including one that I estimated to be 16 inches or better in one of the deep holes (on a bugger).

Where were you fishing it? I fished it twice earlier in the year and caught only native brook trout. Still learning the area. Send a PM if you prefer.

Nice going. That is a good little stream. It's good to know the fish are making it through the summer well.

Not sure if you are familiar with the area, but I walked in at the Silver Pine Bridge. Fished from about 300 yards downstream of the bridge (down to the no trespassing signs) to about a quarter mile upstream of the bridge.

that area typically holds a decent amount of fish over for the year. I grew up about 15 min from that area and have many good memories of that area. Have you ever gone up higher into the public lands?

That area you fish gets float stocked by the silver pine camp pre season and that is it. I always wondered if the fish I catch in that area move up out of the lower sections.

Keptrain, I looked at a map and saw where you mean. I fished it upstream of there in the state forest.

the area sarce said in the state forest section I used to only catch brookies. Last time I fished it I only caught browns. To me it was a shocker.
