Time Fished: 4pm to 630pm
Weather Conditions: 91 degrees and Clear
Water Conditions: 68 degrees, Clear with just a slight tinge
Insects: noticed just a few caddis and cream midges
On the way home from Yellow Breeches I decided to swing by Spruce. I had never fished this stream or even any streams in this watershed so I didn’t have that “when in doubt start with this fly” to rely on. So I guessed and started with a yellow humpy and got lucky.
In the first hole I hooked and lost 2, had about 5-6 other strikes and another 5-6 turned down the fly but they gave away their location.
Most of the trout were small and I thought the sz 14 fly may be too large causing me to lose both fish. So I tried a smaller caddis and landed a 6 incher and missed a few more. It seemed like the fish preferred a mayfly silhouette over the caddis, so I tried a Royal Wulff and a Sulphur compara-dun but they did not work.
The ticket was using 2 different terrestrials. The trout that didn’t take first one took the second one. I landed 3 and the size of fish taking the fly increased to 10”-12” over the smaller fish that were taking the humpy. Once again I lost quite a few fish.
I’d exhausted my opportunities in that hole and needed to get on the road so I fished the humpy back to the truck and had several more good takes without a good hookup and landed none.
If you enjoy fishing wild brook trout streams you probably would enjoy this stretch. It’s very similar...mostly riffles, the holes are marginal, you have to contend with catching brush on your backcast, on a missed hookset and as you are trying make that perfect cast between limbs. The volume of strikes here is far less than typical wild brook trout stream, but I enjoyed it and will do it again.
All 4 fish I landed were browns and all fish that I lost appeared to be browns.
