With the anticipation of good trout fishing with the varibles of cold water in the summer months, cicadas and tons of trout spectorfly and I headed to Spring Creek.
First we hit a stream which shall remain unnamed. It was a brookie stream in centre county and the water was low yet very cold. We did manage to spook some trout but we didnt catch any. I imagine the low water was defeating our efforts. We could hear the cicadas over the next ridge but none were by this stream.
Next we headed to Spring Creek. The water looked very delectable through Bellfonte. The park there you are not allowed to fish but there are tons of trout stocked for exhibition purposes.
We feed the fish took a few pics and moved way upstream in seach of trout. Here is a pic I took in the park. It looks like nice water and the fish would be easy to catch because ppl feed them. It would be nice to see this area opened up to a C&R kids area only. It is easy to fish and easy to catch fish. It could be a way to get youth into the sport and teach practices like C&R.
Spring Creek in the park
After feeding the fish we head to a part of Spring Creek Iam just not willing to disclose on the internet. It gets light pressure as we didnt see anyone through various parts of the day. The fish were rising to Cicadas. We each had one cicada pattern. I had 4 takes on it then prompty got snapped off by a HUGE trout. Spectorfly came down and landed a few on his cicada pattern. He then saw that huge trout swim up near him. The fish was hooked clean in the corner of the jaw and still had the big fly in its mouth. The barbless hook was still in there for now. He tried to land the fish to get the fly back but it refused his multiple attempts. The fish was running in the 23-26 inch range. Hard to tell by looking at it in the water. I did however get a few takes and fish on a Red Humpty pattern. Spectorfly landed a few more on his Cicada and I got a few more on buggers then we left that area.
We fished Fishermans Paradise and above for a few hours. Each of us caught and missed a few fish. I got all mine on Buggers and his on Cicadas. Tons of guys down there and it was a fairly warm day. Spectorfly caught this beautiful wild brown on a cicada....as you can see.

It is very erie up there with all those cicadas buzzing about. It sounds like something out of a startrek movie. The federation vs the clingons. LOL. I just forgot how loud it can be. Sometimes you couldnt even hear the stream anymore.
We grown tired of the crowded conditions and headed to plan B. Logan Branch a feeder to spring is known to have some nice wild browns. Logan Branch is considerably smaller than Spring Creek, but is a very nice stream. As you can see it is a Spring Creek unto its own.

I landed a nice stocker rainbow that was no doubt fat from the multiple food supplies and the cicadas buzzing around. I caught him on a Woolly Bugger. Spectorfly Caught this lovely wild brown on a Bugger also

After trying a few differnt strechs of Logan Branch it just didnt seem to be many fish in it. Or we were spooking them.
Finally we headed back to that more private section of Spring Creek. The fish were still rising. I didnt have a cicada but not all the trout were taking cicads. Black Caddis were buzzing just over the waters surface and trout were taking them. Sipping and sometimes violently. I tied a size 18 Black Caddis on and instantly had 4 trout take it in 4 casts.
All the fish shook lose of the barbless hook. It was a blast though to match a hatch. I had on wild brown in the 13-14 inch range leaping about 3 times till he came off. It is amazing how hard and strong those wild browns can be. Spectorfly had a few more takes on his Cicada. It was nearing 9pm and we had to leave after 12 hours of fishing.The gas was expensive but the trip was well worth it. I cant wait to get back there already. :-D
