Spring Creek Centre County March 19, 2017

Day of the midge. Creek was alive with rising fish, small black midges coming off all day. Water temp around 40. Water was clear to murky. Slower water had a lot of activity but broken water also had its share.

Thanks for the update on Spring Creek and I'm glad you got into some risers. Knock on wood, cause last time I said this we got a foot of snow and a week of cold, but I think spring hatch season is starting!!!!

The activity caught me by surprise. Found it interesting to see where fish were lying and also the importance of taking five and studying the water. Some of the rises were so slight they could have been easily missed especially in broken water. I wasn't much of a dry fly fisherman until a couple years ago but now I find myself craving rising fish even in the winter. Bad sickness to have.

Fished Spring Sunday and Monday with dryflyguy AFISHIN and lv2nymph had midges most of the day olives both afternoons

Was there Sunday and tons of fish rising. Really picky fish in the slower water but were hitting in the faster water. BWO emergers took the majority of fish.

Fished around the hatchery today. Started off sub surface and picked up a couple quickly on walts worm. Around 10:00 am a light BWO hatch started and lasted all day. They trout were pretty much dialed in and ignored anything but my size 18 bwo. #20 would have been better if I had it. Don't leave home without some small bwos and midges and at least 6x if plan on fishing spring in the next few days.

I also agree about at least 6x being required for those picky fish, in that low water.
Of course, there are many on this site who think using tippet that light is silly. Perhaps they should have a go at it with 5X there right now - for dries anyway.

I rarely go below 4x and use 5x for smaller dry flies but I just wasn't getting any action until I dropped down to 6x. I wouldn't do this on say the letort when an 18 inch + plus fish is a real possibility but 10 inch fish on spring really don't test the 6x at all.

Yeah - I usually try to fish no lighter than 5x too.
But those fish are tough customers right now!

Glad to hear the fish are becoming active. We're planning on fishing there in April 1. I'm excited to get out. Tying my bwos right now

Fished it with Albatross and David yesterday. Grannoms came off around 10 30 for 45 min. Fished near Milesburg
