Spring Creek Centre County June 23 &24 2018

Saturday
Showers held off until the evening.water flow and clarity were just right. Lots of anglers, but I found several stretches for myself. Caught several early on terrestrials but later the fish were on cream colored midges. short rain shower ended surface activity on my stretch around 7 pm so I left for the day.
Sunday
Started around 10 am and pounded terrestrials hard though not many takers. Managed 4 by the time I left around 5 pm. Ominous clouds but I don’t think it ever rained. Lots of people out. When you park at the parking lot below Benner Spring Hatchery, steer clear of the rock basins. The large rocks attract snakes. At least 5 were sunning themselves. Not sure what species this time, but last year there were several rattlers amongst the rocks.

These are common watersnakes. They are all over shoreline rocks sunning themselves this time of year. Very common and harmless.

Although it is possible to see a rattlesnake sunning itself along Spring Creek, it is highly unlikely.

Good info on the cream midges.

I was out again yesterday. Did all of my damage on a #14 Parachute Humpy Ant in the Houserville area. There wasn't a soul around until I hit the vicinity of Spring Creek Park, and then it was just walkers/joggers. Note...I did tie some of those midges up in #22-24 with a pale yellow body and cream hackle. I also did some with pale yellow dubbing and CDC. The fish really like the CDC ones best. I found if you skated the CDC midge over fish real close to you, they would clear the water for it. For fish further out, I would slowly strip the midge once I knew it was directly over a fish, and usually got the same response. I missed a bunch and caught a bunch. I'm not a big fan of the minutiae game, but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

I have seen two timber rattlers at FFP on the hatchery side upstream of the metal bridge. Keep in mind that this is over a period of 35 years, so not all that common. I have seen more copperheads there then anything else, and would be more worried about them along Spring.
