Spring Creek, Centre County, 8/3/16

Fished between Bell and Miles this morning from just after dawn until mid/late morning. Temps were 61* when we arrived and 63 upon leaving. Water was very clear once the sun was out, just enough color when overcast. Flow was adequate to fish but certainly not high. Fish fed hard on the bottom for the first hour or two then slowed down as the sun broke over the mountain and the clouds cleared out. Nymphing was productive. Saw a few risers at dawn and nothing after that. Could not get a fish to eat an ant or anything else on top. Fish were picky and had to work hard for them, but very lively as all good spring creek fish are once hooked.

Goodluck. I would fish down close the mouth/below bellfonte. Temps taken in the afternoon at benner were close 70.

You don't gotta knock it off the list, just fish sections that stay cold. The OP gave temps of 63 by late morning, which is by no means too warm. This was below Bellefonte, with the massive cooling influence of the big spring there.

Someone else said 70 at Benner, which is very believable, and IMO too warm to fish.

So just go farther down, and take a thermometer, that's all.

I may venture that way next weekend for round two of camp. I might get check the temps in the late afternoon on the way up to decide if I'll fish it in the morning.

Not directed at you pcray, but in general, if the advice is to fish only in the morning due to temps (especially on freestoners), I avoid it all together. I imagine he fish take some time to recover after fighting for their life. Obviously this wouldn't be the same regarding Spring Creek or other limestoners.

You guys would be fine to fish the morning on spring then take lunch and relax,hit the bar or fly shop, etc for the afternoon and fish evening again below bellfonte. We opted to fish for brookies up in the moutains in the afternoon instead of waiting around.

Pcray, I took temps that high up at benner also, definitely would be avoiding that area. We should get some rain this week looking the the weather and fix things up.
