Me and 2 buddies decided to make the long drive out to Spring Creek, as our local creeks (Neshannock, Slippery Rock) were still too high and muddy from all the recent rain. We got to Milesburg around 7:30, temp was not quite 70. We started out along 150, fishing our way down towards the Kwik Fill. Water temps right around 60. We started getting action right away, black fb hares ears and green weenies working well. My friend Craig had a very nice rainbow on, but it spit the hook after a few aerial shakes. We only saw 1 other fisherman the entire time on this stretch, which I found surprising. We decided to move downstream around 10. We parked next to the water plant, and my 2 friends started out a little up stream. I decided to move down stream towards deeper water. My first few casts...nothing. I threw on another split shot, first cast...wham! My rod instantly folded in half. My joy was short lived, as it broke my 6X off and then jumped straight out of the water (I could see the green weenie in his mouth)...a monster brown. I knew it was big from how quickly my rod bent, but I really wish it would have never jumped out of the water for me to see him. Easily would have been my largest of the year. We all have those stories, but man this one is going to haunt me for a long time. We stopped back at this hole before we left to give it another shot, and I hooked up again w a large fish, I thought holy sh*t the fishing gods are giving me a 2nd chance! Fought hard, and after a few minutes I was able to land it...a nice fat 17" sucker...oh well no complaints. We all caught a handful of nice wild browns, it was a great day. Well worth the 2.5hr drive.

Cool post. I was fishing above Houserville, saw only one other fisherman. The weather was great and the fish seemed very cooperative yesterday except when it got cooler in the evening.
I tried the green weenie but got no takers so I stayed on top the rest of the day. Hate going back and forth between nymphs and dries but sometimes you have to when you want to keep on catching fish. Fortunately yesterday I was able to stay with dries.

Had a similar break off story with a black ant but the fish was about 14". Still snapped my 5x tippet so I kept 4x on afterwards.

I fished Benner Sunday and there was a nice crowd, but they seemed to not to stray to far from the parking lot, fishing was still pretty good. Usually my greenie weenie out fishes all my other flies in this section but they really were not too interested this day. Beetles and Ants on top got me some fish on top though. Good post

Are any Tricos or other mayflies coming off? I'm headed to Spring this weekend.

I did not see any mayflies, but we did notice some tricos

Back on topic... I'm getting the feeling that it's starting to be too late for Tricos and too early for Olives. Is this misguided? Would really like to see something resembling a hatch this weekend.\

It''s not too late for tricos. I fished spring creek on Aug. 27th from 8am till almost noon. I caught a dozen trout. Only three on trico spinners but they were feeding on them. The spinner fall is later in the morning now.
