I had planned to head up last week, but the rain and high water kept me away. I did make it up for some cicada fishing in Central PA, though. @dryflyguy happened to be in the area for the couple of days I was there. This year, water levels, clarity, and the weather in general have been pretty tough.

Both days were clear, sunny, humid, and extremely hot—air temps climbed into the low 90s by early afternoon. Water levels were above average too. Milesburg was at about 450 on 6/22, and Axemann was around 220 on 6/23. The water was off-color, and it stayed high and murky below Bellefonte. I found that the flow and clarity below Bellefonte made it tough to decide where and how to fish the stream.

Cicadas were everywhere along Spring Creek—buzzing in the trees and bushes, flying around, and a lot of dead ones showing up on the ground, which meant plenty were falling into the water. I fished Spring in the mornings, usually from around 10 to 12. I had the best luck in sections with softer water, especially at these levels. Bank fishing and shaded spots produced the best results. I rarely saw fish rising in the faster, deeper runs.

I missed quite a few fish and really wished I had brought a wider range of patterns to try. In general, smaller patterns seemed to work better. Often, I think the trout just missed their mark. I noticed this with a few natural cicadas floating by—trout would strike, but the bug would still be there after the splash. Could be my hook set was off too.

It was a surreal couple of days—blazing hot, cicadas buzzing everywhere, and thick vegetation. Felt like jungle fishing. I drank a ton of water and stood in 55-degree water, which wasn’t too bad.

when they take them, they take them. hook set practically irrelevant. could be not enough big fish on Spring creek. Most of my missed fish were smaller ones that could not take the fly. Fish the larger creeks. The J and bald eagle were fishable in places on the 23rd. I fished the middle J on the 23rd and today. More fish were taken in the faster water than the slow water. Temps are starting to creep up above the major springs, but were still fishable at the end of the day. The highest temp I recorded was 65 and that was at 4;30. Might be iffy tomorrow, but showers and cooler temps on the way.

I am avoiding the BE, which pains me. It's like the Madison river out there with all the rafts floating down. One day there were 4 guide rafts stacked floating down separated by about 30-40 yards (must have been a terrible experience for the clients). Jumped in the car and went downstream and found 3 more at that location. From what I can tell all guides with clients. I experienced the flotilla two other times, so its regular. Heavy storms coming tomorrow and more showers Thursday. That keeps the boat traffic down.

I am doing much better this year than 17 years ago. I think my SMB fishing has improved my ability to cast those big foam bugs to trout

This was my experience on Penns not too long along, the fish engulfed the cicada flies. I had lots of eats in all water types, but the fish I landed were all sizeable.

I'm not really in the know about Spring and Bald Eagle, as I think I've fished them only a few times at this point. I didn't realize so many people floated Bald Eagle?

What does "the BE" refer to? Bald Eagle Creek? And is all this guide raft traffic induced by cicada mania? Or has that become just the normal thing?

raft traffic has been steadily increasing over the last three years ( so has the frequency of walk-in guiding), but yes, cicada mania has led to the current situation. It was made worse by two other streams that guides have been taking clients were higher and dirty than the BE.

I know when I was on BE a few weeks ago, I saw someone with the raft and trailer set up with a PAFF sticker. Who was it?
