Weather: Partly cloudy, temp high 40's to mid 50's (during the time we fished)
Water Conditions: A bit High
McCoy Dam Area:: We fished the stream in the vicinity of the former McCoy Dam, outside of Bellefonte. I hadn't seen this area since the dam removal and we wanted to investigate. We stuck to the stream directly upstream of the former dam. This area is tough to fish this time of year - there is so much water moving through that channel. It's a perfect place to use your High-stick and Czech nymph techniques though.
Not a large amount of insect activity - there were black-bodied caddis (apprx. size 14), also some small black stones (apprx. size 14). I picked up 4 in short order on Walt's worm and the Pass Lake Wet fly. I tied on the pass lake wet fly because of the caddis and stonefly activity - it's been successful for me in the past when down-wings are active. Not much dry-fly water in this area so we moved out after about an hour in search of rising fish.
Spring Creek Road: We moved to a section of Stream along Spring Creek Road - not far from PA Rt 550. This area always seems to have good BWO activity if its going to happen. Sure enough BWO's were coming off. I's say a size 18. There were risers - I saw mostly smallish fish rising though. Only managed two on a Barr's Emerger. The casting must be rusty from the winter - there were enough fish rising that I should have been able to hook up with more. So if you go soon be prepared with some BWO imitations.
Paradise: Hit the paradise for a while in the evening. By the time we were there the only significant bug activity was midges. Managed some on an assortment of different midge patterns - no one pattern seemed to be especially effective. Each change of pattern would yield a few hits and then nothing. Caught fish on black, olive and red midge Klinkhammers.
