I fished Spring Creek from about 3-9PM. Air temperature was in the upper thirties, with a bit of cold wind every now and then. Water temperature was around 45. Houserville USGS gauge was about 80cfs and water had just a little bit of color to it. When I arrived, there were a fair number of cars in the parking lot and a fair number of anglers in the water, far more than there are at night ;-)
BWOs were the attraction, and I watched little browns pick them off about every ten seconds for the first hour. I did not have fine enough tippet on me to thread the hook eye twice, so I gambled and tied a regular clinch knot and figured I would long distance release a BWO fly and fish. However, the knot held until I switched flies. I managed to land three fish and was pleased that they were larger than the 4-5" fish that I could see pursuing the BWOs. I suspect I should have switched to an emerger, because my fish were taken subsurface. About 4PM, the risers abruptly shutoff, although BWOs continued to come off the water.
I don't know why I switched to it, but I had a purple Tim's Hotshot Comet in my box, so I put that on and managed to catch a few more. I had a lot of follows with this streamer and some really aggressive strikes and rolled one fish that probably pushed 20".
As the crowds thinned, I switched over to my streamer rod and put on a mouse. I had a strike on the second cast, but fished for another hour and a half with no activity at all. I was hoping to land a March fish on a mouse, and even had a post title "March Mouseness" that occurred to me, but the fish just weren't moving after dark. They behaved very much like night fish I targeted in Potter County in October one year, as a terminal frost was settling in. The fish were there but they just weren't active and were hanging in the current, not actively feeding. I maybe could have enticed a strike on a big streamer but given the impending two and a half hour drive, I opted to go home instead.
