Fished yesterday below Benner Hatchery for about 1.5 hours and then at the section where a foot bridge crosses the stream. From there almost to the next parking lot. Fished from 9 - 5. I felt it was pretty slow. The water was 225 cfs and went down to 215 at the end of my day. Water temperature 48 degrees. Saw a few caddis and a modest amount of #20 Baetis. I saw fish rising but never put on a dry fly leader. Landed four smallish browns 8" - 10".
The area below that foot bridge has had quite a bit of work done by the local TU chapter. They put in at least five deflector/wing dams. Made some nice semi pools above and swift riffles below. The downside (to me) was on the downstream side of the deflectors large amounts of silt has gathered. In most places 6" - 10" deep. A couple of times had I not had my wading stick I would of either fallen or been unable to pull my feet out of the muck.
Rained last night. Still a good amount of snow on hills not exposed to the sun. Left motel at 10:00 this morning to fish but the flow had gone up to 250 cfs. I could see the stream was ripping. Went to the Paradise and the water was very swift and stained. I left for home.
