Spring Creek, Centre County, 3/10/20

I made my way up to Penns and Spring Creek for a few days. The weather looked exceptional but was not expecting too much other than to get away and get outside. I fished Spring Creek from about 10:00-3:00.

Weather: Beautiful sunny warm March day with the air temps about 65. The bright sun was nice to enjoy but probably didn't help with the fish too much. There was a little bit of a gusty breeze that kicked up after lunch.

Water: Stream conditions were ideal with the water running at about 140 CFS. It hadn't rain in a while and there wasn't too much melt left on the sides of the stream. It was pretty clear, but a normal green stain with temps running 52 degrees.

Hatches: Nice to see some bugs happening. #24 BWO were all about for most of the morning and slowed up about 1:30ish. There were some larger #18 BWO that started happening around noon, but nowhere near as plentiful as the smaller #24's. There were a few trout rising in a couple of the pools, but it wasn't common.

Fishing was a little slow for the conditions, but the bright sunny sky had a lot to do with that. I did manage to catch a few dinks on top with the BWO and cress bugs below. Nothing of any size. The stream was crowded and plenty of anglers getting out to enjoy the weather.

That's great. Good report. Haven't been out yet. But I am ready for sure! Glad to see you got out, Dave.
 
It was a nice few days. I stayed in Coburn at the Feathered Hook. I had some half days on Penns. Not as productive, but will add a SR shortly. Just happy to be outside in some nice weather.
 
Staying at the FH is always nice and convenient if you dont mind spending the money. I haven't been out that way in quite some time
 
fished upper spring the same day and i concur with the report. Fishing was slow because of the intense sun and run off. Snow on the ridge/holla's was still melting. Thursday rain cleared much the snow- but there is still a little around. Fishing thursday, even though it was cloudy was also slow before the rains came in. Once the levels drop a bit more I am hoping for more surface action M-W.

A lot of folks on the stream and ended up chatting with a few as it was so slow. I only saw one other person catch a trout that day. The conversations all came back with the same results of not a lot of action happening for anyone.
 
I fished spring creek wed, thu, and fri last week.
Wed was very slow for me too.

Thursday was a different story.
The rain started mid-day and brought on some olives.
Not a heavy hatch, but enough to get some fish looking up thru the heavy downpour
And they rose until dark.
My best day this year so far.

Friday was back to bright sunshine and quite windy.
And the stream was up a good 4 inches or more and rather murky.
Fishing was very tough again
 
My best day on Spring was in May a few years ago during a drizzle/rain event for the afternoon. Sulfur hatch in the afternoon and surface activity the whole time. More fish than I could count that afternoon of all sizes.
 
my best days on spring by far are in the rain. i think ive only ever caught one fish on a dry fly there, im always nymphing.
