Spring Creek, Centre County, 2/15/2009

I'm a new member of the forum, but I have enjoyed reading here this winter.

My first trip of the year was to Spring Creek on Sunday. Bright sun made it feel warmer than it was, but there was still a chill in the air. I saw a few black/olive midges fluttering about, but never saw any trout rising. After missing a number of fish with a streamer, I switched to a midge pupae and some sucker spawn. The spawn did the trick. I landed a nice rainbow and an averagish brown before leaving after two short hours. Looking forward to my next trip.

I went to Big spring last year on the opener. I forgot 76 didn't have a Newville exit, and had to drive to Blue mountain and get off so I detoured to Green Spring on the way. I quickly left Green Spring disgusted that bait fishermen were fishing a bridge that was clearly marked FFO. A great way to start off the year! I fished the ditch at Big Spring and caught a little six incher, (a brookie) hiding behind a big boulder. I saw some Ha yuge bows hiding at the tail end and across the way. I wasted half of my day driving and at Green Spring but was glad I made it. I'll have to spend more time below the ditch next time.
