Spring Creek, Centre County, 12/10/16 (Canyon & Milesburg)

100+ fish podded up instantly brings suckers to my mind. I wasn't there, I was just asking the question which is fair one. Definitely not a stupid report or a stupid question. Tewart, you saw over 100 fish podded up with lots of 20 inch fish on the GP? I was there Tuesday and saw plenty of redds but no paired up fish. I was by falls road assuming you were further down.

PS Fox aren't you the one who doesn't fish much anymore? Maybe I'm getting that mixed up, if I did my apologies.
 
the truth is there are more suckers than trout in spring creek and the suckers can get very big. So Troutbert's question is legitimate in my opinion.
 
If anything I was just being super careful about not fishing over spawning/post-spawn fish. I'm glad I could keep some people busy here!

So what is the fly of choice for targeting suckers??? Glo-bugs I'm guessing? I should have partaken in the action!

I've caught them on almost every nymph in my box. Nothing like telling your buddy it's a big brown just to find out it has a mouth like a toilet seat. Anytime fox gets involved things get busy, gotta bring your A game.
 

Could of been either I have seen groups of bigger groups of trout in penns in deep holes in the winter and also big suckers.
 
Here in a month I'll be looking for those pods of suckers. I'll run some sort of egg pattern right through the school and will instantly hook up with the brown trout intermixed.

The trout will even become ballsy enough to nudge the suckers to have then drop eggs.

A month from now seems early for spawning suckers. Do you see them spawning, or getting ready to spawn in late Jan. or early Feb.? I've always thought March-April for sucker spawning season, but perhaps I've been missing something.

Agreed, suckers spawn in april and may
 
White Suckers in PA start to spawn in March. Some will begin to move up the small runs in Feb and start the spawning process.

When I was a kid we would get them by reaching under the undercut banks and catching them by hand when they ran up the little creeks to spawn. I remember it being late Feb because that is my birthday. Cannot say if they were actually dropping eggs that early but definitely they will be actively spawning in March and into April.






 
Trout and suckers are usually mixed in on spring, with a big pod usually being a majority suckers. I spotted a pair of big browns paired up and about 10-12 suckers, with about 10 more solo smaller browns swimming around in one hole yesterday. With the water as low as it is now, if you watch careful how they act and move around you can usually tell which is which.
 
Suckers don't have an adipose fin. Start there.

Leibs is a possibility as well, but the statewide standard requires a second survey in which a Class A equivalent biomass is found in order for any removal from the stocking program to take place. I expect that survey to take place in 2017. Frankly, BT are so abundant there that anglers fishing for the stocked RT must be having a very limited impact on the BT. As you know, the habitat/cover may be challenging for many anglers, providing extra protection for the BT.
 


I always see large groups of suckers this time of the year it's hard to miss them as low as it is on most streams.
 
Fished spring creek yesterday at the wastewater plant, caught a few nice browns, and one nice bow.

The real reason for this post is a question... What the heck are the white tubes hanging down by wire stretched across the stream upstream of the wastewater plant? Kayak course?? That's the ugliest damn thing I've ever seen on a stream.
 
If you were in Bellfonte, they have a Kayak course layout at the small park near the train tracks.

Yes, that's kind of what I thought, however I've never seen one before. Some of the wires are broken, and in dis-repair. It really looks like a giant eye-sore to me.

Agreed, it would be an eye sore even if it was in good condition, but its all beat up, broken pieces laying around, hanging at weird angles, a shame IMO
 
white tubes hanging in the water...hundreds of fish huddled together ...and strange ET music being played
