Spring Creek, Centre County - 1/6/13

Made may way over to Spring Creek mid-day in the Canyon section. I was up taking my daughter back to PSU and jumped out for a few hours.

Weather was cloudy and about 37 degrees. Lost my thermometer so all I can say was the water was cold. A little bit of snow from the previous week was still on the ground nice to see. Saw no insects.

I threw a bunch of streamers with no luck, then went to some nymphs and walts worms. Only saw three other anglers. Very quiet out there today.

Nice day and glad to get out.

Fished same section the day before you. 2 buddies and I had about 2 20 minute windows of activity. only one fish on midges, the rest from walts worm. but like i said, only for about 20 minutes. we covered lots of water with no luck. but great day regardless
 
I never did well in January. Tried like hell, but things didnt work out for me. I found 42-43 to be the magic number on the thermometer. Typically found those temps in february.

I am going up to visit my brother mid february. I will see if I get on the water.

Just for curiousity's sake, is that picture taken near the pistol range about 125 yards upstream of that derelict pump station? If it is the stretch I am thinking it is, I used to love that 75' of water. No matter how poor the day was fishing, I would always get a fish there. Many a good bow too.
 
I'm going to fish Spring Creek tomorrow 1-9-13. I will have to let you fellas know how it goes. I know from experience that January can be a tough month to fish there.
 
I fished it on both 1/3 and 1/5 and had similar results, although I did get a hookup on an articulated streamer on the 3rd and that was awesome.
 
Turkey and I fished it in the snowstorm, he hooked up on the second cast and I thought we were going to have a banner day. Didn't work out that way. We both caught some fish, but it was slow going.
 
I didn't do very well and should have tried to cover more ground. It helps when your moving around more too. I was well dressed, but my feet still got very cold after two hours.

I may go back up in a couple of weeks and change my tactics.

I changed plans and now figure to fish on thursday 1-10. I think it's going to be a nicer day.

Well I fished Spring Creek today from about 11am till 145pm. It was a great day to be out. I saw about half a dozen other fisherman. They must have had the same idea I did. I checked the water temp at 1pm, it was 42 degrees. Did fairly well for January. I caught 9 , all browns. The fish of the day took a gold-bead size 14 Walt's Worm. Also caught them on small egg patterns. It was really enjoyable as this was the first time I fished in 2013. Great to be on the water.
 
Told you, 42 degrees is a magic number! sz14-16 walt's worm is usually the magic fly as well. This guy knows whats up.
 
Thanks fellas for the nice comments. I usually don't take water temps as I'm too busy fishing but for some unknown reason I was curious today and it read 42 right on the mark. Man did it feel great to be on the water. :-D

Nice report and pic! Yeah, the Walt's Worm is a wonderful thing. I have been only using a Woolybugger (in every size and color imaginable) but the new tail less nymph, Walt's Worm, is a real trout producer for me!

The Orvis "sonic seam" (no more stinkin' stitches, thank God) chest waders won't be available for sale until the middle of Feb! And I'm a stubborn guy? I refuse to buy anything else and I won't patch the leak I have now!

Soooo ....... I have become addicted to crappie with my UL spin tackle! I only hope and pray that I'll have the courage to pickup my fly rod again when my new waders arrive?

Please pray for me, Sasquatch, as I also have become hooked on the omega three crappie fillets that are so tasty and healthy for me! In the past, I've eaten a couple trout, and ......... I almost puked! But I'm a C&R guy when I have a fly rod in my hand!
