Spring creek, Centre County, 03/21/23

Took a day to fish spring. Cold AM. bright sun and clear water at a good level. Doing some version of drop shotting and Euro-Nymphing with a nymph about the size and color of a Beatis. Caught a nice one after about 15 min. Caught about 4 in 2 hours. AS the day wore on, it warmed, the sky hazed a little and a good number of BWO's were coming off. And...the fish clammed up.
That's it. Fishing sucked just as it should have taken off. No risers. Sucked. Glad I took the 2+ hour jaunt for my 1st Spring trip of the year, but it wasn't very good fishing. Good numbers of grannom cases upstream of Bellefonte.

I am fortunate to fish spring regularly, and your observations are consistent with my experience over the last two months. The stream has fished well below expectations based on past experience for this time of year. Hopefully rain yesterday and forecasted rain for this weekend will provide a reset.

Concur with findings regarding grannom casings above Bellefonte. I’ve recently come across grannom casings above Shiloh.

Update: March 28, 2023

Water: Flows were around 100 cfs and the water looked great with a slight green limestone tint.

Weather: Cold morning gave way to a pleasant early spring day. Mostly cloudy with peeks of sun throughout the day. Temps started at 38 degrees and were in the low 50s when we left.

Hatches: Midges (22-26), Caddis (18), bwos (18-20) and sparse brown stones (12-14). Aside from the midges, none of the hatches were overwhelmingly heavy. There were enough bugs in the air to have risers from 1200-0430 pm.

Results: Nothing spectacular, but not bad either. We picked up fish in the morning on Walt’s worms, caddis larva and midge nymphs. Caught about a half dozen on top in the afternoon on olives, caddis and midges. The size of fish was a little lacking, but it felt great to be up in the State College area.
