Spring Creek, Centre Co., 6/2/12

Fished the Fisherman's Paradise section today on a bus trip with Penns Woods West TU. Arrived to dirty brown water around 10AM with no fish rising. Started out slingin a #4 black sculpin. No dice. Switched up to a black wooly bugger and had a small one on. Then decided to switch over to a #14 green weenie and that was the fly that I got 4 more hits on. Fished from 10-8 and landed 2 out of the 5 I hooked. Beautiful wild browns. Seriously had to work for it today between the dirty water, plants snags and the challenge of finding fish on a new creek. Tough day; most people were lucky to have a couple of hookups. Didn't see any fish rise till around 7:30. Didn't know what they were rising to. Tried caddis and sulphur duns but no takers. Then around 8 a storm brewed up and we had to leave. All in all, I have to say that I feel lucky to have caught a couple wild browns on my first time fishing a limestoner. Can't wait to come back to try Spring under better conditions. As a bonus, I got to see the family of eagles by the hatchery. Very cool!

I was there on Saturday too with my Hacklebarney Chapter of TU. Fishing was OK. The big surprise was the only "hatch" of damselflies I have ever fished. Up by the ponds there were millions of little tan damselflies in the grass that occassionally flew over to the creek and landed. A handful of fish were rising at spots where the current pushed to foam line to the bank and I caught a couple on top.

Other than that, tried big articulated streamers early and had plenty of swirls, including a 24"+ one, with no hook-ups. Then had decent fishing with chamois worms and scuds. It was a junk fly kind of day. The dry fly action was an unexpected bonus.
