Spring Creek, Centre Co. 2/8/09

Fished Spring this morning, water level was nice and there were a few midges coming off. Some fish were rising but I stayed subsurface with a size 14 scud trailed by a zebra midge in size 20. I caught a few small browns before changing to a size 6 sculpin which produced nice fish the rest of the day. Most ranged 10-14" with one large rainbow around 20" (picture to be posted in photo section). Loving this heat wave, hope it keeps up. tightlines

That is one fine looking rainbow. I caught a nice rainbow on Spring the day before (Feb 7) that went about 17.5 inches. It was also a good looking fish, but I was disappointed in the fight it gave me. The browns I caught all fought well, especially the big one I hooked and lost.

I ended up fishing spring creek for the first time yesterday. I intended on fishing the Little J, but it was blown out when I arrived at Barree. I drove up along spruce creek and that was really trashed. I took my chances and drove up to State College. Started in town @ the sr 26 bridge and fished up. Landed one 8in. brown on a bh caddis pupa. I decided to drive down stream and boy what a good choice that was. I had no idea that the stream would be that gorgeous.

I end up fishing above fisherman's paradise and searched for active fish with a green matuka. Landed 3 more brown's of modest size on my 2 wt, missed A LOT more, so I left spring creek with a smile. I intend on making another trip out of it!

I talked to another guy down at fisherman's paradise and he had very similar results while streamer fishing.

He put up an OK fight but it didnt compare to the strike, he just crushed it. But your right the wild browns always seem to have more spunk, I had a few of them with some nice jumps yesterday. He ate a #6 sculpin tied with an olive zonker strip and lead dumbell eyes.

nice choice that explains alot. Those fish in there, especially the bog boys have seen it all. That fly is a bit differnt than what most people would throw.

Wow!! I also use smallmouth flies for trout.
