Times Fished:
10:00 AM until dark on Thursday, and 0700 AM until 0500 pm on Friday.

Weather:
It was mostly cloudy with brief showers on Thursday. The temperature reached into the low 60s and, at times, there was a decent breeze. Friday was very pleasant, it was mostly cloudy, but clearing in the morning and the temps reached into the upper 50s. The sun was fully out by the afternoon hours and the stream came to life. It felt much warmer on Friday, as the wind diminished and there was no cold rain.

Stream Conditions:
Spring was looking good and flowing at about 110 CFS. The water had a slight stain, but was overall clear. The stream temps were in the low 40s, and I think they played a huge factor in our trip, as when the sun came out in earnest on Friday, both the bugs and fish became aggressive.

Hatches:
BWOS were coming off in size 18-20, the hatch really has not materialized yet this year, as I think the stream has been a little cold, but they were around both days, and got a little stronger on Friday. I also saw some Blue quills size 20, mixed in with the olives. The stoneflies size 14 in black and brown were very active in the afternoon Friday, and the ever present midge was around in sizes tiny to very tiny. Very few fish were responding to dries, and the hatch was so sparse, that nothing was coming up in rhythm. We did see some acrobatic takes on the stone flies, but not consistent enough to change tactics.

Results:
It was a great couple days of relaxation!!! An old friend from College joined me, and we both agreed that day trips to Spring Creek are the thing of the past. We took two days, so we could slow down and enjoy the water and not have the rush home. On day one, things looked right for the big olive hatch, but it never fully happened in the area we were fishing. We were picking up fish near the tail outs of the deeper runs, bottom bouncing tandem nymphs. It was low and slow meticulous fishing, but fun no the less. We went to the Paradise stretch in the afternoon, and got to sight fish a couple, which brought back good memories of fishing with Dave Weaver and Dan "Squaretail" several years back. Day two was more of the same, but the fish were much more active in the riffles and the takes were aggressive. In fact, I finished the trip dead drifting two soft hackles to match the stoneflies on the banks and had a couple aggressive takes on the swing at the end of the drift. Overall, it was a nice trip...A lot of fish came to hand, some big fish came to hand, good food was ate and beer was drank!!! You cannot ask for much more than that.

Very well done report. Great to hear that spring is on at Spring.

We're seeing some olives and stoneflies here in the CV but they've been typically spotty and hard to predict. Some days you get lucky and time it right. We just gotta keep fishin.

SC3 is a beautiful fish. Seems to be eating well and somewhat rare to see big black spots and red spots on a brown. Hope to replicate your success on the stream M-W this week, although all daytime fishing will be crammed into the hour before sunset each day.

Great report. I also fished spring yesterday, saw the stones coming off all afternoon (thought they were caddis at first) with the olives but not many looking up. Some pretty colorful bows in those pics.

Fished Spring today 12:30-5. Fished below paradise , it was pretty overcast till about 3:30 then it cleared up. Saw olives in spurts with few risers. I also saw some stoneflies bouncing around later in the afternoon. Just a handful of bugs. Good water levels. Good many guys about. Caught a few on PT nymphs , and couple pops on the leadwing coachman. Temps into mid 60's by late afternoon.

I fished 3/14 - 3/16 up and down from Benner Springs hatchery. Monday and Tuesday it was only for about an hour and a half before dark. Talked to a guy in the parking lot Monday who said he had done well. He also claimed there were no stoneflies on Spring Creek. We talked about night fishing too and I offered him a mouse fly, but he refused it, saying he did not take flies from other people.

I did not replicate his success Monday. I scarcely moved a fish. Only saw one or two risers and I finally salvaged the outing four minutes after sunset when a fish took a bugger.

Tuesday, I managed to get on the stream a few minutes earlier. Fished through the same stretch I had fished the day before and again moved very few fish. Once I got above that area, though, I started to move fish and ended up catching a few. Did a little mousing at night, but did not have a single strike and only saw one or two fish when I hit the water with a headlamp in a quarter mile stretch walking back to the car.

Wednesday was a banner day. Took a long walk and finally landed fish quantities like I would expect on Spring.

Never did catch a strong BWO hatch any of the days, and the fish I caught were taken on nymphs and buggers - not your typical Spring Creek fly, but the Conehead LiteBrite minnow sure produced. 95% of the fish I caught were in shallow (1-2') riffles. Anything deeper than that, I simply was not generating any interest from the fish. Monday, I fished predominantly the deeper water and only picked up the one fish once I got to some riffles. Tuesday, I started picking up fish in that same batch of riffles and upstream from there, and Wednesday, I fished through some deeper pool sections with little success until I hit the riffles, where I again had success.

I spent 4 days on spring creek this past week.
Some BWO's hatched sporadically every day between 2 and 4 pm. Not great dry fly fishing for sure. But if you knew where to look, you could find rising fish.
