JackM and I got out for an adventure in the snow today. We drove up to Spring Creek to try our luck. The water was 44 F, and the air temps were in the mid 20s. There were no insects hatching, we may have seen one or two rises all day.

The fish seemed slugish and we had to really work for our fish today. Jack landed two browns and I landed one. As a bonus, we each landed a sucker. There were a ton of suckers in the deeper pools. Are the suckers migrating here from the Susqehanna river system to spawn or are they resident fish?

Glad to see you made the drive to spring. If I remember correctly, I thought you said before that you normally stop off somewhere else before spring. Is the Benner Springs?

The suckers are premanate residents and usually inhabit the deeper holes, especially in the Winter. However, There are a ton of browns that hang around the suckers. One day I landed 8 suckers (mount hooked) before my first trout out of one hole.
 
I sould have known because there are so many "secret spots" on Spring.
I'm guessing untouched water too Jack? :lol:

I have to drive over the Little J to get to Spring, so in the past I hadn't been able to bring myself to drive the extra 1/2 hour each way.

We had the whole stream to ourselves when we arrived at 11 AM. We did bump into a few other hardy souls on our walk out at 5:10 PM. Yes you heard me correctly, Jack left the steam over 10 minutes before nightfall!

Now wait a minute. If those guys hadn't been in that hole we would have stopped and finished out the available light.
 
So there has to be no insect activity AND subzero conditions for Jack to knock off before nightfall?

Hope you guys had fun. Winter is not always the best ti9me to get an accurate idea of a stream. I am sure we will spend (at least) an afternoon on spring during the Jam.

So what was in that hydration pack? Was it something to keep you warm or what?

FFJ,

This was the maiden voyage for the new hydration pack. Could have used a little anti-freeze. Maybe a 10% solution of ethel alcohol next time...

Nothing like a little jungle juice to keep one warm in the winter.
