Flyswatter and I spent 2 days on Spring Creek to fish Tricos & Terrestrials. Thunderstorms on 7/31 and in the early morning on 8/1 brought the creek up significantly and gave it some color, but levels dropped quickly and it was between 75CFS and 100CFS while we were on the stream.
8/1 - Fished the horse shoe bend area between Siebert Rd and the Dairy Farm. Air temp between 75F and 82F. Water was roughly 100CFS and murky with visibility roughly 1'. Afternoon fishing was sloooow. Saw a few scattered rises but no repeaters and no strikes. After an early dinner at Damon's we fished the Benner Springs section. After losing all of my best ant patterns, I switched to a black caddis and quickly picked up 3 between 10" - 12". Hooked a real hog in water that barely covered my feet, but it spit the fly back at me after a few seconds. Finished the evening where we started at the footbridge and caught 3 nice fish right at dark on the black caddis.
As it got dark, I saw 8 - 10 Turkeys roosting in a tree over the stream. One by one they flew out of the tree and into a less "active" area. Very cool watching them and hearing their wings beat in the air!
8/2 - Back at the Horse shoe bend area below the foot bridge. A light drizzle started at 6:30am and there was a heavy fog over the water when we started at 7am. After a few prospecting casts with the black caddis, I switched to a sow bug and started catching fish. Most were in the 10" - 12" range, and I picked up a fat 16" brown lurking under some overhanging weeds. It was laying in a small pocket right against the shore that just looked "fishy" and he took on the first cast. The takes to the sow bug were slow and very light, and I lost several before slowing down my striking rhythm. Caught 9 on the sow bug and lost easily another half dozen. Good fishing!
The drizzle stopped around 8:30, and at 9:00 a few Trico spinners started to swarm, but with the fog and overcast they never really got going. There was a brief flurry of rises around 9:30am, and for an hour some smaller fish were picking off the few spinners that did fall. I packed it in around 11am, having caught a dozen fish. Overall a good morning, and a good two days on Spring Creek!
