Fished in and above Bellefonte. Water nice level and quite clear. Fish rising to midges as soon as I arrived at 10:30. Olives appeared about 11:00 with fish not super turned-on to them. Hatch wasn't great. Lasted about 1 hour plus. I heard Spring has been POUNDED for 2 weeks solid and the fish acted like it. Usually a fish rising to olives takes the 1st or 2nd well presented fly. They were skittish to the fly and I had some last minuet splashy rejections. I had plenty of company moving in on me, but they left soon after arriving.
Take the crowding, the pummelled fish and the variable quality of the BWO hatch into consideration before you make the trip.

You should have been there Sunday. The fishing was amazing. The BWO hatch was strong for about 4 hours and every fish seemed to be rising for them. Between 3 of us we caught over 50 fish on dry flies. It was an amazing day to be on Spring Creek.

Good for you. Was there Friday- no rain.

I did not witness anything I would call a great hatch that day.

Still try and chase a day down here soon for that hatch. Stupid bugs.

It's funny how the slightest change in conditions can make all the difference. I think the only thing that was different from Friday to Sunday was a little rain. The air temps were pretty close and the water temps, although I didn't take them, had to be only a few degrees different.

Fished it yesterday by Benner Springs fishing was decent caught a few on streamers didnt have much time was fun though.

I was there Sat; only saw a few bwo all day, kept thinking it was about to happen but it never did. The fish were midging most of the day though. I got 4 on midges and one on sucker spawn.

Here's a pic of 6 trout waiting behind the suckers for eggs. I did catch one of them. The suckers on on the right, upstream of the pipe.

I know that spot well. I was there on Saturday and saw that same pod. I wasn't fishin, I was with my wife just walking the stream. I did have my fly box in the car and gave a feller some sort of egg fly to have at em, don't recall if it was a sucker spawn or globug. I thought I remembered him being from Schulykill Cty too. Was it you? If so, then I saw two board members last weekend, you on Saturday on Spring Creek and MKern on Sunday at BFC (I was fishin Sunday).

At that exact spot, doing the exact same thing, I caught a 21 incher several years back.

pcray,
yes, that was me!
Many thanks for your generosity. As you know I fished it from the other side; so then later from below, than again later from above which is where I caught the trout. The drift was much better from above.
It was a pleasure meeting you.
Thanks,
John

Yuck, trash fish orgy!

JF,

Awesome. It was nice to meet you too, and I hope my poorly tied fly helped a little. For future reference, the BWO hatch is not spectacular in that exact stretch, but 5 or 6 pools downstream it picks up considerably. Saturday was no exception. I can't say what I saw in the short time I was there was a great hatch, but I saw a fair number of BWO's in the air and on the water, there were steady risers, and the guys down in that area were hittin em pretty good.

I always liked that little stretch for tricos, though. And sulfurs, they're just everywhere....

Finally.

Hit'em good yesterday- did'nt even tie a nymph on. Cream midges size 22-24 worked well. In the afternoon, olives added to the already staeady risers. Bwo is 18 both dry and parachutes worked. Good day that I have waited for.

Ryan,

Obviously those wild browns waiting below think differently. They were swimming up and nudging the suckers to get the spawn out. And when the suckers let go of the eggs, you see the trout fight over them. Interesting stuff. Matching the hatch indeed.

JF, that is an excellent picture. I saw them goofing around this weekend but didnt get to see where the the trout actually hang around behind them waiting for a treat.
I lost 3 bruisers at the handicap parking lot area last year on the same day with sucker spawn from that activity.
Didnt see any big boys?
