Preface: I‘ve been Flyfishing for years, but only recently began fishing in NEPA; and am a totally Newby to euronymphing.

Its a beautiful day, and I got out on SFTC. Conditions seemed very good… water is crystal clear, weather sunny and temps in the 40’s… all seemed right with the World.

BUT

I didn’t move a single fish, no hookups, no flashes, no nothing. With the water being so clear, I figured I’d at least see a fish or two, or at least see them spook.

Wondering if anyone has any insight into having success on this stream? Its close to home, so I want to fish it…

It is special Regs water in this section, so maybe it gets hammered, though I didn’t see a soul on the water.

Your insights are greatly appreciated!

There should be some hold overs but it hasn't been stocked since last April. This year it is scheduled to get a fall stocking in October along with the regular spring stockings. That will make it fish better through the winter.
 
Not familiar with a creek but I'd like to ask, since you are Euro nymphing, did you feel like you were in constant contact with the bottom? That'd be my first rule-out. Also was your sighter and leader always straight? Reason I ask is that you just started Euro nymphing and these are problems I encountered when started to fish this style. The issue may lie in your fishing not the stream itself.

Does this creek rely solely on stocking for its fish, or is there some natural reproduction?

Hi SO,
I am attempting to keep the line tight to the flies. I see some movement of the sighter from ticking the bottom, so I think I’m on the bottom at least some of the time. I’m sure I’m not 100% connected, but I am at least enough to pick up a fish or two I’d think.

I’ll continue to focus as I do more euronymphing… hopefully I’ll get Better at it. :—)

My problem with E. Nymphing is having too many bottom snags. I use weighted flies but no additional lead unless I'm fishing jig streamers. This happens even with 16s and 18s. Pretty frustrating.
 
Tightlining takes some practice. If I'm not catching fish in a run I'm confident in or looks like it should hold fish I always add weight. If you are losing a lot of flies to the bottom drop shotting is a big help.

I’m not losing flies to the bottom since SBTC is wade accessible… though I am losing quite a few to the trees with this 10’ nymphing rod 🙂

It does get hammered pretty well, but I have taken some holdovers.
 
The dam above the section of the creek you were fishing is a top release and the water gets quite warm below. I fished it directly below the dam over the summer and temped it at 78° one afternoon. The stream does not appear on the PFPC, natural reproduction list, nor do any of its tributaries below the dam of which I am aware. I have not spent a lot of time in the project water, but have fished the other two branches of Tunkhannock Creek fairly extensively. PM me if you would like some information on some other places that I think will be worth trying.
