Hey All, after reading so many small creek reports on smallmouth I decided to give my close by smallie spot a try and was not disappointed!! I fished fron 11:00am til 2:00pm downstream from twin arches bridge sunny 50 degrees, water was cool but not cold had 3mm neoprene on with no socks and feet never felt cold.
first fish was a longear sunfish, then a 14 inch smallie, and continued to catch 13 or so smallies all on olive or black and olive BHWB. Took a little time to find the right water, no fish in the fast stuff, none in the rally slow stuff but plenty of action in moderate flow with rocky bottom 2-4 feet of water.
Fished the WB more like a nymph, with a wide arch drift. Worked best to trow right across or just up stream, about a foot from far shore and allow a bit of a J in the line. Then would give a twitch every few seconds and let fly drift til totally down stream. Fish would grab it at any point of the drift and a few hit just at the end, but none would chase on the retrive. Most hook-ups felt like a snag at first and then would start to pull. Don't think i had any misses, all the fish sucked it in good.
I fished this section alot last july and august until the draining of lake williams and then the flood, never had as good a day for big fish. had 4 fish 12-13 inch, 2 fish 14 inch all were good a fat. Last summer out of 100 fish or so biggest was 13 and only 2 or 3 12inch.
