Time Fished: 505pm - 755pm
Weather Conditions: 57 degrees, Sunny
Water Conditions: 52 degrees, green tint, nice color
Insects: a few March Browns, maybe 25 sz 18 Yellow bodied mayfly, Sz 18 White bodied mayfly, lots of midges (on the wing some looked white and others tan)
I started out with an olive woolly bugger on point and a Royal coachman as a dropper. Caught 2 browns on first pass. Second pass I replaced Woolly Bugger with a March Brown nymph. Caught a brown and a rainbow.
During pass #2 I saw 5 trout appear to take a fly from the surface. I went back to those risers and tried a March Brown dry and a Caddis dry, but they never came back. I figured they must’ve chased a nymph to the surface rather than being an active riser.
At this point I tried a couple of streamers and then sucker spawn in a deeper section where I expected some rainbows to be laying. None of those flies caught a trout.
I went with a large black woolly bugger and it wasn’t very effective. So I re-rigged to my second setup again (March Brown nymph and Royal coachman dropper). Caught 2 more browns.
I then went downstream to another hole and kept the same rig. These fish were actively feeding as the sun was fading. That was a great way to finish.
All told I had 48 strikes. I caught 14 browns and 2 rainbows. 55% took the point fly and 45% took the dropper. When it comes together like that I feel it’s the optimum setup providing 2 flies they want.
I took a picture of the dense group of tan midges (note the blurry tan dots are the midges). Just loaded.
