Time Fished: 1230pm - 230pm
Weather Conditions: 52 degrees, had been raining for a few hours
Water Conditions: 42 degrees, off color but not bad, flow was pretty swift
Insects: None
I started with a streamer hoping to catch the brown trout bite in full swing. It was only half-swing but it was ok by me. On my first streamer pass I hooked 7 and landed 4. All were browns. They fought a lot like cutthroats do where they just stayed in one spot and quickly forming a U shape and then quickly reversing to U the other way. Just back and forth. I’m used to browns getting hooked and driving to deeper water. These guys just flailed in one spot for a long time. The browns at Caldwell yesterday did some of this too.
I changed streamers and pass #2 usually turns up a few fish but nothing. I added weight and dead drifted the fly along the bottom and I caught 3 nice rainbows on 3 straight casts. I made about 4-5 more casts and hooked another rainbow that jumped and spit the fly.
That was it. 30 minutes of good action and no strikes in the next 1.5 hours despite trying new flies and new methods. I thought water temp must have dropped but it was still 42, same as the temp when I arrived. Oddly the rain stopped at this same time. But it stopped and started a few more times. Anyway, a productive stop but rain is getting in the way of good fishing.
On the way over from my camp. I had 2 deer jump right out in front. Barely missed #2 which appeared to be last years fawn trying to keep up with its mother. My new tires saved me on the wet road.
Went another 3/4 of a mile and saw a Red Fox, obviously shedding the winter coat. The deer are doing the same.
